SSC (Staff Selection Commission) conducts a number of exam for recruitment in various Ministries/Departments of Govt. of India. This article provides you an introduction to SSC Exams : it gives you the complete list of SSC exams so that you can have a birds-eye-view of all them. This article in itself is not going to help you prepare for any specific exam, but would help you understand what SSC exams are.
This exam list has been arranged eligibility-wise (i.e. minimum qualification required), so that you know in which exams you can appear, based on your qualification. Let us start this by knowing what SSC is in brief.
What is SSC?
While UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) conducts higher level recruitment exams like Civil Services, Engineering Services exam etc. , SSC (Staff Selection Commission) conducts recruitment exams for Group “B” & “C” posts in the various Ministries/Departments of Govt. of India.
Founded on 4th November, 1975 as “Subordinate Services Commission”, it was later renamed as “Staff Selection Commission”. With head quarter at New Delhi, SSC has seven Regional Offices at Allahabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai, Bangalore and two Sub-Regional Offices at Raipur and Chandigarh. These Regional / Sub-Regional Offices are responsible for conduct of the SSC exams which are held in approx. 1700+ exam venues all across India.

List of Exams conducted by SSC:
Without taking time further let us go into the subject matter of this article – SSC Exam list. As said, this list is arranged based on minimum qualification eligibility-wise.
Matriculation level exams:
SSC Constable Exam:
SSC conducts this exam for recruitment of constables and rifleman in various CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces) like ITBPF, BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB and Assam Rifles etc. From time to time, it also conducts Constable Exam for Delhi Police.
SSC MTS (Multi Tasking Staff) Exam:
SSC MTS (Multi Tasking Staff) Exam is conducted to recruit group-C posts such a Peon, Daftary, Jamadar, Junior Gestetner Operator, Farash, Chowkidar, Mali etc.
Both of these exam needs Class-10 pass as minimum eligibility.
Higher Secondary level exams:
SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) Exam:
This exam is conducted for recruitment of Data Entry Operators & Lower Division Clerks in CAG, CBI, CVC, Ministry of Agriculture, Armed Forces Headquarters, Election Commission, IB etc. Prior to CHSL 2011 (i.e. till CHSL 2010), exam for Data Entry Operator and Lower Division Clerks was held separately. From CHSL 2011 onwards, both of these exams were clubbed and the exam was named as SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) Exam.
SSC Stenographer Exam:
SSC conducts this exam for selection of Stenographers (in grade ‘C’ and ‘D’) who are posted in Armed Forces Headquarter, Central Secretariat, IFS, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, President’s Secretariat, Railway Board etc.
Both of above exam needs Class-12 pass as minimum eligibility.
Diploma level exams:
SSC JE (Junior Engineer) Exam.
This exam is conducted to recruit JE (Civil) and JE (Electrical) in departments such as CPWD, BRO, Military Engineering Service (MES), Department of Posts, Central Water Commission (CWC) etc.
This exam needs Diploma in Civil/Electrical/Mechanical engineering as minimum eligibility.
Graduate level exams:
SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level) Exam:
SSC Conducts CGL exam to recruit various posts such as Assistants, Sub Inspectors, Inspectors, Assistant Enforcement Officers etc. in various organizations such as Central Secretariat Service, CVC, CBI, IB, Ministry of Railway, Ministry of External Affairs, Income Tax etc.
SSC SI/ASI (Sub-Inspector/Assistant Sub-Inspector) Exam:
SSC conducts this exam for recruitment of Sub-Inspector and Assistant Sub-Inspectors in various CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces) like ITBPF, BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB and Assam Rifles etc. It also conducts this exam for Delhi Police from time to time.
Both of above exam needs Graduation as minimum eligibility.
In addition to above regular national level exams, SSC also conducts exam based on organization needs such as below:
SSC FCI Assistant Grade Exam:
SSC conducts this exam for recruitment of Assistants (Grade-II & III) in FCI (Food Corporation of India).
This exam needs Graduation as minimum eligibility.
SSC Prasar Bharati Exam:
SSC conducts this exam for recruitment of Engineering Assistant and Technician in Prasar Bharati (comprising of Doordarshan & All India Radio). For Engineering Assistants, 3-years Diploma in Radio /Telecommunication or allied field or Degree with Physics with one year experience in the related field is required. For Technicians, Diploma of at least 2 years duration in Electronics/Telecommunication is required.
SSC IB Exam:
SSC conducts exam for recruitment of Asst Central Intelligence Officer in Intelligence Bureau (IB).
SSC Delhi Police Exam:
This exam is conducted for recruitment of Sub-Inspectors (SI), Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASI) in Delhi Police.
One important thing to note here is that SSC conducts these organisation level exams based on the requirement of the organisations. Hence these are not held every year like SSC CGL or CHSL exam.
